TrueNAS 12.0-U8 is now out. This is an update release rather than a major version release, and that makes it almost the calm before the storm. The next planned upgrades will be to TrueNAS 13 and TrueNAS Scale 22.02 over the next few weeks and months.

TrueNAS 12.0-U8 is Out TrueNAS Scale Release Date Targeted

This week, the big announcement is the availability of the new TrueNAS 12.0-U8. You can read the release notes here. Some of the highlights:

  • There are new fields in the S3 service configuration form
  • OpenZFS 2.0.7 is the new version being used
  • There are also a number of bug fixes and security patches being deployed
  • TrueNAS root user cannot be used as a SMB user to improve security

This is not a huge overhaul, but rather another refinement of the platform update.

Perhaps the other exciting news is that TrueNAS Scale 22.02 is nearing release status. From iXsystems: “TrueNAS SCALE 22.02 is in RC2 phase now and is expected to reach RELEASE quality later this month (2/22/22).” (Source: iXsystems)

Clearly, the launch date is targeted to a day social media will erupt by virtue of it being 2022-02-22 or 2/22/22 as the company states. Still, that is less than three weeks away. I know many on the STH team, and many of our readers are excited about this hitting release status. TrueNAS Scale feels like the future of the platform integrating both scale-up with ZFS with scale-out clustering into a Linux-based platform. Expect more on STH as that platform is finally launched.

If you are thinking about building a new NAS and going TrueNAS 12.0-U8 to TrueNAS Scale, you may want to think about the timing over the next few weeks. Going FreeBSD to Linux is different than simply upgrading FreeBSD versions so it may be worth waiting or starting on RC2. Usually, post-release U1 or U2 is where one would start using the new solution for businesses (after some time to find and fix bugs) so keep that in mind as well.

Final Words

Big things are coming later this month. We cannot wait. For some, the new TrueNAS 12.0-U8 will bring bug fixes to improve deployments. For others, the news around TrueNAS Scale is going to set off weeks of eager anticipation.
