TrueNAS Scale 22.02.2 has hit another milestone with its latest release. iXsystems, the company behind TrueNAS says that Scale is seeing broader adoption (20K+ downloads) as it works towards making the solution larger-scale deployment friendly. TrueNAS Core 13.0-U1 is also being slated for an end of June 2022 availability, so we have less than a week and a half until that is out.

TrueNAS Scale 22.02.2 Released

TrueNAS Scale 22.02.2 adds some big features. Notably, it now has high-availability clustering for the TrueNAS M-series as well as better SMB clustering. With TrueNAS SMB clustering, a Samba client can access the clustered (ZFS and Gluster) volumes via any SMB node. This is important because it allows VMs and containers to access data even if a node is not accessible. This is really a foundational element for TrueNAS Scale before it can see mass adoption, so it is great to see.

Where we are for the TrueNAS Scale journey, we can start by looking at the original release lifecycle timeline from February 2022:

Here is the June 2022 update for it.

At this point, even though U2+ would be for larger systems, iXsystems says that “TrueNAS SCALE is primarily for simpler deployments and tech labs” at this point. So the company is still recommending TrueNAS Core for larger supported deployments.

From iXsystems, the major 22.02.2 changes are:

  • Increased Dedup performance with SHA-512 checksum default
  • Improved pool importing in corner case situations
  • Allow multiple containers to use same shared Intel GPU
  • Cloudsync Azure Custom Endpoints enable the use of Government Clouds
  • UPS Monitoring and Reporting fixes
  • Clustered SMB APIs. TrueCommand uses these APIs to simplify cluster deployment.
  • Middleware Performance Improvements with increased drive counts (Source: iXsystems)

There is also enclosure management functions for iXsystems machines that have been ported over.

Lots of great new stuff here.

TrueNAS Core 13.0-U1 is Coming

We may not get to this one when it is released, but U1 is coming in a few days, by the end of June 2022 and U2 in September:

That will continue to be the iXsystems main storage platform as more features are added to TrueNAS Scale.

Final Words

It is great to see the progression on TrueNAS Scale. The new release’s SMB clustering is very important for the solution going forward. The next major release will be “Bluefin” (this is still “Angelfish”) and that will bring ZFS-backed cluster snapshots and more. While this may not be ready to be your main storage solution at work today, it is the line we are most excited for at STH since it opens up a world of new options for TrueNAS.
