At CES 2022, NVIDIA showed us a refresh of its 2020 GPU, dubbed the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti. We did not get full details on this unit, but it is still impressive to see. We are going to just transcribe the specs so we can give the information that we have. This is not a new generation of GPU, it is an update of the Ampere line.

NVIDIA did not formally launch the new part, but this is the update to the RTX 3090 that we also reviewed in a NVLink dual GPU configuration. The RTX 3090 is the high end GeForce GPU, and these are very costly, often going for well over their initial MSRPs.

The specs mentioned during the CES talk were:

  • 40 Shader TFLOPS
  • 78 RT TFLOPS
  • 320 Tensor TFLOPS
  • 24GB of 21Gbps GDDR6X memory

This is a bit of a letdown. Although NVIDIA may be offering more, it also is not giving us more GPU memory. Given the cost of these GPUs, it would have been nice to see an improvement here. Staying at 24GB as street prices soar is harder to stomach.

Final Words

This is a tough one for us. It is great to see a new platform with more performance. On the other hand, in this segment, we had the 24GB Titan RTX, the 24GB GeForce RTX 3090 that took its place, and now the upgraded 24GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti.

Our sense is that this launch is a bit influenced by Intel’s Arc announcement that is coming. Even without announcing a new line, it can say that any RTX 3090 comparisons are not to its top-end because it has the RTX 3090 Ti coming.

If you missed it, here is our 3090 review video where we go into more of the compute possibilities with this platform.
