The last bit of news from AMD at CES 2022 is perhaps most exciting for STH readers. We already covered the mobile Ryzen 6000 launch. Now, it is time for the next-generation desktop CPUs. The 3D V-Cache technology is being productized for the desktop in the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D. AMD also noted that its new Socket AM5 platform for Zen 4 CPUs will come out in the second half of this year.

Doing these live so please excuse typos.

AMD’s new desktop part will be the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D. This is an 8 core/ 16 thread part with an additional 64MB of AMD 3D V-Cache. That gives the chip a total of 96MB of L3 cache or 12MB per core. AMD said it will be drop-in compatible with most existing AM4 platforms.

AMD is comparing the performance of this part to the Intel Core i9-12900K.

Availability is slated for this spring so that should be out just before the Ryzen 7000 series launch.

The first big one is the move to the new AMD Zen 4 architecture.

AMD did not disclose much, but it did disclose that it will have a new Socket AM5 platform ending the reign of AM4. The new platform will support DDR5 and PCIe Gen5 and will have a LGA1718 socket. LGA!

AMD needs a new platform, but with the lack of PCIe Gen5 and DDR5 in the market, maybe it has better timing on its platform. We also expect features like 40Gbps USB4 to be in this generation.

Final Words

The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D is really interesting. It is basically an answer to the Core i9-12900K that Intel launched last year, but it is launching later in 2022, just before the new AM5 platform comes out. The big question is whether it will be worth the update at that point or just waiting until AM5. Also, AMD’s high-cache strategy means it is pitting an 8-core Ryzen 7 part against a high-end Intel part. That means AMD is using one less compute die (but adding a 3D stacked cache die) for this part to compete which is very interesting.

Overall, let us face it, we cannot wait until PCIe Gen5 comes to servers!

  1. Last paragraph before final words, should be “expect featuers like 40Gbps USB4”, not DDR4. 😉

  2. Let’s hope AMD’s PCIe5 platform has x8/x8 standard. A single x16 is badically so overspecced for the desktop as to be stupid.
