At MWC 2022 in Barcelona this week our chief, Patrick, got to stop by the Supermicro booth. So, I got a few photos with a note “can you write something about these?” In those photos we have two new Xeon D-1700 codenamed “Ice Lake D” platforms and another Elkhart Lake platform with two of the three being fanless designs.

First, we have the fanless Supermicro SYS-E302-12D. This features at least two different Intel Ice Lake-D SKUs. One is a Xeon D-1718T quad core CPU. The other is an Intel Xeon D-1736NT 8-core part with 2nd generation QAT onboard. There are also dual 25GbE ports and quad 1GbE ports.

The rear I/O is similar to a E300 system we saw with fans, the SYS-E300-12D-4CN6P previously.

The new Ice Lake-D platform brings some compute upgrades, but more by way of networking, PCIe Gen5, QAT, and other acceleration versus the previous generations. If you missed it here is the launch piece: Welcome to the Intel Ice Lake D Era with the Xeon D-2700 and D-1700 series.

There was also a short-depth 1U system the SYS-510D-10C-FN6P at the show that seems to be based on the same motherboard but with active cooling.

This looks like a future firewall platform for many of our readers. We did not get to feature this platform in our Ice Lake-D launch article.

Aside from Xeon D, there was also Intel Elkhart Lake in a fanless embedded platform.

This has the Atom-based Elkhart Lake processors. You will see it is a 4-core, 12W model called the “x642SE” here, but that is not a public SKU. We think the “S” should be a “5” and is the x6425E. Here we get quad 1GbE ports, we also get video since the Atom CPU has an onboard GPU, and we also get 10Gbps USB ports.

On the back, we can see USB 2.0 and serial ports like we saw in our recent Supermicro X12STN-E Review. These are for industrial embedded applications.

Final Words

Since the main thrust of the Intel Ice Lake D series is really network and embedded applications, these seem like cool platforms. I can see why I was sent a task about writing something about these photos. These are new platforms, so it is always good to get to see them out in physical form instead of just on web pages.

  1. I can only image the future of appliances with all these possibilities now. Is the new xeon D really good?
