At MWC 2019, Intel made a number of new disclosures around products aimed at 5G infrastructure providers. A few of these we think our readers will be very interested in. The Intel Snow Ridge 10nm SoC we had first shots of in December 2018. Intel also disclosed Hewitt lake is coming as a next-generation Intel Xeon D processor.

Intel Snow Ridge Disclosure

Intel Snow Ridge is coming in the second half of 2019. Intel announced design wins at Ericsson and ZTE for 5G access products.

We first showed off Snow Ridge last year in our piece: Intel Shows Off New 10nm Server SoC With 100Gbps and H265 Offload. It is a 10nm SoC that is designed to handle H265 video streams as well as 100Gbps of network traffic.

This should also be one of Intel’s first infrastructure 10nm products.

Intel Xeon D Hewitt Lake Generation

One of the more interesting announcements is the Hewitt Lake SoC which is targeted as a successor to the Intel Xeon D-1500 NS. We covered the Xeon D history to date in our piece: Exploring Intel Xeon D Evolution from Xeon D-1500 to Xeon D-2100.

Intel is releasing a series of x86 CPUs to meet the specific requirements of those who are deploying 5G networks. Intel is showing off higher clock speeds which it needs in the face of the AMD EPYC threat. AMD EPYC 3251 is able to beat the Intel Xeon D-1500 soundly in its current form.

Other Intel Disclosures

Intel also mentioned that Cascade Lake is coming. For readers of STH, the new 48 core / 12 channel memory is Cascade Lake-AP.

STH will, of course, have lots of content for that release.

Intel also said its upcoming XMM 8160 5G modem is on track for shipping samples earlier but certainly in volume in 2020.

Final Words

Overall, these are expected announcements from Intel. We are very interested in Snow Ridge and Hewitt Lake and comparing them to current generation embedded options as well as what will be available later this year.
